James Holledge told the story of Laurence Hynes Halloran, “one time curate of Broseley, [who] was the author of a variety of documents — bad verse, indifferent sermons, counterfeit credentials for himself, and some highly doubtful marriage certificates for the unfortunate couples who mistakenly believed he was a properly ordained curate.
“Finally, this bogus cleric forged a postal frank in the name of Sir William Garrow, thereby defrauding the Post Office of tenpence and, as a result, he was in due course sent off to Australia as a convict, sentenced to 14 years transportation for forgery.
“An excitable Irishman, Halloran quarrelled impartially with generals, colonial governors, high church officials and ships’ captains. But he made a mistake when he squabbled with Dr Townsend Forester, the Rector of Broseley. The indignant rector promptly reported his curate to local magistrates for counterfeiting the postal frank two years before. Six law officers, who had been warned by Dr Forester that Halloran had a nasty, unpredictable temper and the habit of carrying two loaded pistols in his pockets, burst into the curate’s lodgings, seized and bound him and hustled him off to Newgate.”
Halloran died in Australia in 1831 following many further adventures.
