John Borderer offered his ‘Recollections of a Shropshire dialect’, and how it had changed over his quarter century in the county.
When he first arrived, “one commonly heard the expressions ‘dunna’, ‘munna’, ‘cunna’ and ‘inna’ but, doubtless owing to the standardising influence of radio and television, they are rarely heard today.
“Some of us would find it refreshing today to receive a caution that ‘You munna say cunna; it inna polite.’
“Of course, malapropisms are not the monopoly of any particular locality and Shropshire is no more guilty of them than any other county. Here however are two which were heard in our village.
“An old lady, discussing a wrong diagnosis of a doctor, and wishing to point out the fallibility of the medical profession, observed confidently ‘Of course the doctors do their best, but they’re not always immaculate.’
“An employer said to be rather puritanical in outlook sent one of his men to get some cigarettes from the local. The man made use of the occasion to get himself a pint of beer. A mate observed that his boss might smell the liquor. ‘Never mind if he does,’ said the quiet drinker. ‘The boss might be a bit narrow minded, but he ain’t bigamous.’”
