The Woman’s Outlook column in March 1960 sang the praises of lemons, proving it to be the most versatile of fruit.

“Run out of setting lotion? Never mind. Lemon juice and water makes an excellent substitute. Add the strained juice of half a lemon to a cupful of boiling water and comb it through your hair before pinching your waves into place.

“When dry, your hair will feel slightly stiff, but when it is combed out it will be wonderfully soft, glossy and manageable.

“Don’t throw away the squeezed lemon rind; it is splendid for your hands, as it removes stains and discolourations and brightens up your nail polish. It will also smooth away all those little roughnesses that snag your nylons, leaving your hands satin smooth.”

As if that were not enough: “Many articles can be cleaned with the help of a lemon. Squeezed halves of lemon dipped in salt will clean tarnished copper and brass; lemon juice and whitening will clean and bleach piano keys. Squeezed halves can also be used to whiten the draining board or kitchen table; rub well, leave a short time to bleach and then rinse with cold water and dry. Don’t use lemon on an enamelled kitchen table or table-top refrigerator, as the acid will leave dull marks.”

As ever, The Shropshire Magazine of 1960 was the housewife’s help!
