The November magazine in 1959 was a ‘Special Wellington Edition’ which featured a wide range of articles focusing on what was then the second largest town in the county.
Among them, Dorothy Carran described an autumn trip, by bicycle and bus, from her home near Wenlock Edge to Wellington.
Cycling up Presthope Bank and along the Edge into Wenlock, Dorothy then takes the bus through Broseley, Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale to Wellington where, she writes, “the whole town simply seethes with people. The amount of traffic trying to pass through the town is almost elbowed out of the way by the people!, but there is an air of good humour flowing over all. . .. There certainly exists an air of great vitality.
“Food seems to be the chief aim of shoppers and shops. The most luscious and tempting array delights the eye on all sides. The butchers especially rival each other with great joints of beef, pork and pies, and the greengrocers with the freshest looking fruit and vegetables.
“There are mouthwatering varieties of fish, altogether making Wellington a gourmand’s paradise. Clothes seem to take a secondary place.
“It is better not to go into the Market Hall unless you can temptation a little. . .. It is all a joy to see, and somehow you stagger away feeling that, this time, you have really got a bargain, whatever you have fallen for.”
