• In a month when the 2009 Shropshire Magazine looks forward to a new face for the Bishopric of Shrewsbury, 50 years previously we were profiling one of his predecessors, the Right Reverend RL Hodson, who was to retire in October 1959.

• On the motoring pages, ‘RPM’ reported on “The Battle of the Babies”, as various manufacturers released new small family cars. Older readers might remember the introduction of the new-style Ford Anglia, with its “FOUR-SPEED gearbox with a centrally mounted gear lever.

“There are many motorists – I am among them,” wrote RPM, “who have felt that a four-speed box would be a distinct asset to a number of British cars.

“The new engine . . . produces 39 brake horse power at 5,000 revs per minute.”

For younger motorists that will be proof indeed, then, that progress is sometimes a good thing.

• The classified advertisements continued to entertain. Fred Roberts (Phone 58), Ellesmere, was advertising Standard fireworks ready for the November 5 conflagrations; Wilding’s of Shrewsbury were well evident, as normal, offering books, printing, frames and stationery; and there was a slightly unusual addition: “Nudes of Jean Straker: leaflet for 6d stamp — Visual Arts Club, 12 Soho Square, London W1.”

We have no idea who the advert was aimed at, or whether anyone replied.
