In a joint August/September issue, necessitated by a national printing strike, the Right Reverend RL Hodson explained the history of the public schools of the Woodard Foundation, of which two – at Ellesmere and Shrewsbury – were in the county.

These schools owed their inception to Nathaniel Woodard, born in 1811. He received only a superficial early education, thanks to being one of twelve children, but went up to Oxford thanks to the kindness of two maiden aunts, and was then ordained to a curacy in Bethnal Green, London.

Shocked at the illiteracy and ignorance he saw around him, he campaigned for the educational welfare of the ‘middle classes’ – by which he had in mind small landowners, professionals, solicitors, doctors and the like.

“He raised prodigious sums of money by means of what he called ‘nice lunches’,” explained Rev Hodson, although “if anyone did not come up to his expectations he would tackle them personally.

“It is recorded that having received a cheque on a certain occasion for £1,000 from some wealthy person, whom he knew could give more, he tore the cheque up in his presence and refused to leave until he had received a cheque for five times as much.

“So great was his challenge that during his lifetime several schools were founded and today the number in England and Wales is 18.”
