♦ In a month when we report an appearance in the county by modern-day royals in the form of Princes William and Harry, the July issue of 1959 reported another royal visitor in the shape of HRH Princess Margaret.
Rather surprisingly relegated to the last page of the magazine, it was related that this was the princess’s first official visit to Shropshire, and she dropped in at the Royal Normal College for the Blind at Rowton Castle; old people’s cottages and a community centre at Craven Arms; the newly restored St Laurence’s Church in Ludlow; and the County High School at Bishop’s Castle, England’s smallest borough.
“Among those presented to Princess Margaret at Bishop’s Castle were the head boy and head girl of the County High School, David Bennett and Gillian Ransford.
“When asked by the Princess if they had had their tea, they said no, not until after they had been presented. Princess Margaret then invited them to sit at her table and take tea with her.”
♦ ‘RPM’, the motoring correspondent, reported on BMC’s “secret” new baby car – what would be the revolutionary Mini.
“The car closely resembles the small Italian Fiats and is said to have a top speed of around 70mph . . . Hints are that the probable cost will be around the £500 mark, and fuel consumption is put at a probable 50mpg.”
