• “Manners maketh Salopian,” wrote Dorothy More, commenting on how she had been made to feel welcome on moving to the county, and the wonderful friendships offered to her.

“You make me think of a letter I read in a paper, not long ago,” said a fellow traveller.

“The writer said that his mother went about on a tricycle, but in the new district they moved to, she was so much embarrassed by people’s rudeness, pointing and sniggering, that she had to give it up.

“I did write to the paper and say that if she liked to change again and come to Shropshire, she could go where she pleased, quite unnoticed.

“Believe it or not, t’isn’t so many years ago that a man passed me riding the old-time Penny-Farthing, with a huge front wheel, and no one looked at him twice. Indeed, men have led along elephants and bears in my time, and our folks minded their own business.”

• EV Bayne recalled how Shropshire villagers had “queer ideas of sport in the old days”.

In Shrewsbury, on October 8, 1594, the Corporation made an order “that there shall not be hereafter any interludes or playes made within this town or liberties upon any Soundaye or in the night time. Niyther shall there be any playing at football, or at hilties or wastrells [cudgels] or beare-bayting within the walls of this town.”
