• “Where did you go for an outing when you were a boy,” Elizabeth Pearson asked an old friend.
“Me?” he replied. “Nowhere.”
But this brought reminiscences of times long gone when the author went on annual outings from the little chapel at Lightmoor to the Wrekin.
“As we waited for our conveyance on the day appointed we were all much too excited to talk,” she reported.
“The distance from Lightmoor to the Wrekin seemed tremendous [in reality it is just three or four miles – Ed], and when at last we arrived there home seemed very far away.
“Each child in turn passed through the Needle’s Eye before going to a little place on the hillside for tea. After that there were games and we scrambled for pennies scattered by the minister. Some of us had at least fourpence each after the scramble.”
After their evening return to Lightmoor, “We younger ones thought it all very wonderful, and were so tired we could scarcely crawl the few yards home.”
• In the motoring pages, ‘RPM’ reported on the new MGA Twin Cam. The car reached 100mph from standstill in 31 seconds, and went on to 121mph. No other car offered such performance for the money: £1,265 (including tax) as an open two-seater, £1,357 as a coupé, the magazine reported.
