In July’s Midlands Magazine of the Year

• PAINTERS were at work on the Kingsland Toll Bridge, Shrewsbury. Our correspondent reported that the bridge was “at the time I am writing this, a symphony in pastel shades of eau de nil and mal de mer, with honours about evenly distributed”. The writer judged it would “merge more harmoniously into its background of river and trees than did the suspension bridge in its somewhat crude blue”.

• EC WADLOW, on a page devoted to Shropshire humour, recalled how a rustic from the county remarked to a London bobby “Yew be extra busy ’ere today, b’aint you?”

“No, I don’t think so – nothing more than usual,” replied the puzzled policeman.

“But yew must be,” insisted the countryman. “Don’t yew know there be forty on us ’ere today from Wem.”

• ELIZABETH Pearson wrote about the annual invasion of frogs arriving in her pond a month late. “Where they all come from is a mystery. One day there may be two or three frogs about and the next the pool is alive with them.”

She put their April arrival down to the fact they “like to conduct their domestic affairs in warmer weather than March supplied.”
