Our motoring page celebrated the introduction of a new British sports car, the Austin Healey ‘Sprite’. Retailing at £668 17s, it was claimed to offer fuel consumption of better than 40mpg, not bad even by today’s standards. Acceleration, however, described as ‘snappy’ was less favourably comparable: 0–70mph in 34 seconds.

The property section contained details of The Cottage at Strefford – an early-17th-century timber-frame cottage, off the beaten track, with particularly attractive contemporary chimney stacks. With three sizeable bedrooms, and mains water and electricity, agents Cooper & Green were asking £4,750.

Veronica Thackeray told the story of ‘Ludlow Castle . . . Windsor of the West’. It was a castle of such import in its heyday that it was the chief of the 32 border castles. Being a Marcher lord, she wrote, was by no means a peaceful occupation.
