Born in 1885, Dorothy More revelled in the fact that she was Victorian, and the Magazine recounted some of her memories, after she witnessed “the Modern Child’s bored reaction to Christmas – combined with indifference to (if not ignorance of) the season’s meaning”.

30 years ago

Renovation work at Shrewsbury School was yielding important clues to the sites earlier history. Among the finds was a child’s first leather shoe on the highest roof timber at Rigg’s Hall – it was estimated to be more than 400 years old. The hall was known to be an old wool merchant’s house.

20 years ago

Basil Cutler learned all about the art of ‘pleaching’ – a technique used by hedgelayers that allows the hedge to grow thick and strong. Expert pleacher George Evans explained the driving of angled stakes into the ground at 30-inch intervals, and the bending and intertwining of branches.
