‘Outlook for 1958: Revolutionary changes in design are unlikely’ was the rather downbeat headline on the motoring page. “The motor industry likes to keep us guessing, but while there is talk of ‘turbo cars’ in the future, nothing is more certain than that the internal combustion engine will be with us for many years to come.”
40 years ago
The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble appeared at the Lion Hotel series of concerts, and surprised audiences by playing ‘hosophones’ – lengths of hosepipe topped by plastic funnels. The quintet claimed that they were unique.
30 years ago
The property section looked back over a year which had been ‘the best for residential property since 1973’. Barbers’ Shrewsbury office reported that property values in the £10,000–£15,000 price range were 15 per cent higher than a year previously.
20 years ago
In most parts of the country, a mention of a Wurlitzer organ inspired only regretful nostalgia, wrote Ralph Oldham. But in 1988 Shropshire was looking forward with happy anticipation, as it was about to welcome one of these musical giants for the first time. It was to be installed at The Buttermarket, Shrewsbury.
